Masonic Regalia Care & Storage Guide: Aprons, Collars, Jewels & Mantles

Masonic and fraternal regalia can combine embroidery, silk-like textiles, leather, velvet, bullion trim, metal fittings, ribbons and other delicate components. Proper care depends on the actual materials of each item. The guidance below offers cautious starting points; follow any product-specific or maker instructions first.

Before cleaning: identify the materials

Check the regalia buying guide and your individual product description. Do not assume a mantle, sash, apron or collar is machine washable. If fibre content or care instructions are unclear, ask Luxe Regalia before using cleaning products or heat.

Aprons and embroidered textiles

Handle decorated surfaces with clean, dry hands. Avoid rubbing bullion, sequins, ribbon and embroidery against rough fabric. Gently remove loose surface dust with an appropriate soft tool if the material permits. Avoid soaking, bleach and home stain removers unless the item's instructions expressly permit them.

Collars, sashes, robes and mantles

Allow a garment to air after use in a clean, dry area out of direct sunlight. For items that may stretch or distort when hung, use appropriate flat storage. Store structured garments with enough room to prevent crushed trims and decorations. Keep differently coloured or dyed fabrics from prolonged contact when colour transfer is possible.

Jewels and metal accessories

Keep jewels, enamel and plating away from abrasive surfaces and uncontrolled moisture. Avoid untested metal polish, solvents or ultrasonic cleaning, which may damage plated or enamelled parts. Store individual pieces so they do not scratch one another or embroidered material.

Leather and mixed-fabric products

Genuine leather, linings and trims require material-specific care. Excessive water, heat and direct sunlight can harm many leather finishes. Do not use a general leather conditioner on embroidery, textiles or an unfamiliar finish without specialist advice. Mixed-fabric mantles and tunics may need different care for their exterior, lining and trim.

Protecting regalia between ceremonies

  • Choose clean, dry storage away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid tight folds across embroidery, shaped aprons and metallic decorations.
  • Use clean garment or regalia cases where appropriate, keeping sharp jewels separated.
  • Check occasionally for dampness, stains, colour transfer or damaged fittings.
  • Transport ceremonial items with protection for delicate edges and ornaments.
