The Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm
The Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm (M.O.V.P.E.R.), better known simply as The Grotto, is a fraternal organization created by and for Master Masons. While not officially a part of Craft Masonry, membership is exclusively open to Master Masons in good standing.
The Order is best known for its spirit of good fellowship and joyful camaraderie. Though centered on fun, laughter, and entertainment, it also embraces a deeper side—one that teaches optimism, brotherly kindness, and the value of fellowship. Its motto, “Good Fellowship,” captures that spirit perfectly.
The Origins of the Enchanted Realm
In the years leading up to 1889, a group of Masons from Hamilton Lodge No. 120, F.&A.M., in Hamilton, New York, began gathering informally to unwind from the serious duties of lodge work. Among them was LeRoy Fairchild, the enthusiastic leader of these meetings.
In the summer of 1889, Fairchild and his companions created something special — the Enchanted Realm — a space for Master Masons to laugh, relax, and enjoy brotherhood in a new way. The group held its first official meeting on September 10, 1889, deciding that only Master Masons in good standing could join.
The idea spread like wildfire. Masons from near and far were drawn to the fun, color, and good humor of the new Order. So many wanted to join that on June 13, 1890, the founders established the Supreme Council of the Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm, giving formal structure to the growing movement.
The Purpose and Spirit of the Grotto
The Grotto exists to bring joy, unity, and friendship among Master Masons. It encourages renewed interest in the Blue Lodge and strengthens fraternal ties through humor, fellowship, and shared experiences.
While it makes no claim to be part of Symbolic Masonry, it proudly remembers that its entire membership comes from within the Craft itself.
The Ritual and Experience
The Grotto ritual is unique and spectacular — a dramatic ceremony with a cast of 30 or more, elaborate costumes, and a Persian-inspired atmosphere. It combines mystery, color, and humor in equal measure. Beneath the laughter lies a serious lesson about optimism, brotherhood, and good fellowship — one that leaves a lasting impression on every initiate.
The production aspect of the ritual provides endless opportunities for creativity, stagecraft, and theatrical flair — something that has always set the Grotto apart from other Masonic side orders.
The Legacy of Good Fellowship
The Grotto stands as a place where Masons can smile freely, relax together, and build lifelong friendships. Its guiding principle remains unchanged:
“A smile for all, and a frown for none.”
Through laughter, compassion, and genuine brotherhood, the Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm continues to remind us that joy itself can be a noble part of Masonry.
